Sun on Trial

  • kevinrav by kevinrav

As fellow sun observers, what is your educated opinion on this idea of Pierre Marie Robitaille:

I've been convinced by the overwhelming observational evidence that the sun is no longer a gas, definately still in great part a plasma,
but possibly containing condensed matter (Liquid Metallic Hydrogen) on the surface.

    Interesting...

I remember hearing about this guy a few years ago. I used to get strange emails about the 'Electric Universe'. I presume that his strategy was to email as many PhD students all around the world until he found collaborators.

Aside from the fact that his theories don't make any sense, I completely support the idea of crossing over different scientific disciplines and trying out new theories, but I think it makes sense to work with people in those disciplines who can get you up to speed on the current state of things. The fact that he didn't try to publish his work is also worrisome... As is the fact that he opted for a press release as a way to publish his ideas. I think press releases can be a great way to distill scientific ideas for non-specialists, but not as a way to put fundamental science findings on the public record.
