In the NASA video theres a small flare just before the main M9.3 event. Is there a known pattern of pre-flare triggers or is it just a coincidence? I'm not sure if the video is in real time or if its been compressed...

@Mjbarrett , do you mean the little flash of light that appears before the camera saturates? I would say that it's just the flare itself but it has not saturated the camera yet. However, what you say it could be true too. A small explosions that produces some disturbances nearby that produces a larger flare. I will search in the literature to see if there's some previous studies.

http://helioviewer.org/?movieId=X1HX5 Slowed that down a little a picked a wavelength it was clearer at. 😃 Gives a much clearer view of the little flare. It's below the background level of the GOES x ray flux, so it's hard to say much about it except 'less than a C'

Wow thanks all. I looked at the video a couple of times and thought that I could see a small flash (flare) below and left of the main event. I think that it might possibly originate in the SS group in the sw? It was just out of interest so please don't go to any trouble.

All the SDO data is freely available and very easy to access! http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/aiahmi/ is faster but limited to 5 minute cadence, http://helioviewer.org/ tends to be slower to fetch data but has the 1 minute cadence for SDO. It also has data from more than just SDO.

Hi - yes, some researchers have investigated "mini-flare-before-the-big-flares", some called them 'crinkles', but nobody's yet looked at pre-(big)-flare emission patterns in-depth. Here's a link where at least the abstract is free: [http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2001ApJ...560.1045S]. I really think there often are pre-flare little brightenings often...I've sure seen them a lot!

Edit: previous comment removed. It just took time to download the pdf file and find it. I now have the paper. Thanks again.
